CARE Name: Kacey

It was supposed to be another routine office visit to Northwood Animal Hospital. COVID precautions were still being followed throughout Tallahassee, so clients had the option of dropping off their pets or waiting in the parking lot for their appointments. One of my favorite people who works at the clinic came out to help with our dog and shared a story about an extra small nugget of love (a long haired female dachshund) named Kacey who was being cared for by the staff since birth and was a CARE puppy looking to be adopted. I bet you think “How sweet, a baby looking for adoption!”. Initially named Kacey, this CARE pup was born without any front extremities. Yes, you read that right. On top of that, no one told this lil spunky, beautiful girl that she was any different. Kacey wasn’t afraid of anything! She grew up at Northwood Animal Hospital. That was her first home and all she really knew—which you can still tell to date by how extremely excited she gets when she visits Northwood.

After being introduced to Kacey we really hoped to be chosen amongst the others who wanted her as well. Her application process was very in depth as they had to make sure her adopters were a great fit.

Thank you to CARE who chose us! Northwood helped by getting us a 3D printed temporary prosthetic wheelchair to help Kacey be mobile. As Kacey reached her first birthday we figured she wasn’t going to grow any bigger (or longer!). CARE helped us purchase a prosthetic from a company who specializes in these types of apparatuses. It’s rare to make prosthetics for front appendages, but this company felt very comfortable doing so. They told us they’ve never made one so small before. Kacey is only 4 lbs. To date, Kacey’s only changes are that she gets around a lot better, we changed her name to Sophia “Kacey” Loren, and she runs with the big dogs, literally!
