Regenerative medicine is a new, exciting area that we offer to our patients at Northwood Animal Hospital.

The stem cell therapy that we provide utilizes adult stem cells, NOT embryonic stem cells at the center of ethical debate over the past few years. The source of the stem cells we use is from adipose cells (fat cells) which the majority of our patients have plenty of. The cells have a limited ability to differentiate and grow, with the ability to form cartilage, ligament, tendon, bone, muscle, nerve, liver, and cardiac tissue. When these cells are implanted into a region, they secrete growth factors and cytokines (sends signals to cells) that can stimulate repair and regeneration of tissue, similar to using a bone graft to stimulate fracture healing. It also appears that the stem cells have the ability to decrease inflammation and pain at the affected area.

The potential uses are unlimited, but current therapy that we provide involves treatment of osteoarthritis cases, focusing on arthritis involving the hips, knees, and elbows.

Harvesting of the cells involves a short surgical procedure to collect the cells, followed by a procedure 48 hours later to implant the cells at the desired location. In between these steps, the harvested fat is shipped overnight to a lab in California (Vetstem) for isolation of the stem cells and returned to us the next day.

The treatment with stem cells is not a panacea for arthritis pain, but early results have been VERY promising. For best results, stem cell therapy should be combined with other modalities (physical therapy, weight loss, drugs, nutraceuticals, etc) for arthritis pain control.
